Michael Francis Sherron, Oct 4, 1944 – Aug 4, 2022
Michael “Mike” Sherron, 77, formerly of Kokomo, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Grand Brook Memory Care, Greenwood, from complications of COPD and long-haul Covid. He had lived with Alzheimer’s Disease and vascular dementia for over 7 years.
Mike was born on Oct 4, 1944, in Gary, IN to John and Ruth (Anderson) Sherron. He grew up in Denham and North Judson where he spent his summers working in the peppermint fields and playing baseball as an all-star catcher. He graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary. He served in the US Army from 1963-1966 where he was stationed at Fort Hamilton, NY and Bad Kreuznach, Germany and rose to the rank of Sargent. In the Army he met Danny Goodnight, formerly of Frankfort, and they remained friends for over 50 years.
Mike obtained his barber license and worked for a short time as a barber and later as a steelworker at US Steel in Gary. In 1970 he moved to Kokomo for a position as an assembly operator at the Chrysler Transmission plant and worked there until his retirement in December 2000. In his free time, he enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and was a member of the Good Ole’ Boys Motorcycle Club. He was also a lifelong fisherman and enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing the lakes and rivers of Indiana and Michigan.
Mike retired in Foley and Sheffield, AL where he spent his days reading books, working in his yard, hanging out with Danny, and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and Tennessee River. His dog Minnie was his constant companion.
In 2016 he moved to Minneapolis to live near his daughter, Lissa. There he participated in University of Minnesota FIT AD Study to study how exercise affects symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and brain function, and he provided biologic samples for research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester with the hope of helping others. He later moved to Grand Brook Greenwood where he was beloved by staff for his kindness and helpfulness.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Sherron, his best friend, Danny Goodnight and his nephew Steven Sherron. He is survived by his son John, daughter Lissa, brothers Tom (Sharon) and Joe (Kathi), and several nieces and a nephew. A private celebration of life is being held by his family. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mike to the public library of the donor’s choice.
