On the afternoon of July 30th, 2023, Adoracion “Dory” Cahiwat Jimenez passed away due to
complications relating to injuries sustained during a tragic house fire. Dory had just turned 81.
After exhausting several options to repair damage done to her lungs, a stroke resulting from
bodily trauma, and the resulting failure of several organs, Dory was taken off support while
surrounded by her immediate family. At 3:07 p.m. Dory took her last breath in the arms of her
daughter and grandchildren at Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.
Dory was born July 15, 1942 in Manila, Philippines to Diodoro and Luz Cahiwat. She resided in
the Philippines until 2002 when she immigrated to the US to live with her daughter, Amelita and
her family in the quiet little town of South Whitley, Indiana. Dory worked several jobs to send
remittances to her family in Manila as is custom among the Philippine diaspora. Before retiring,
she was a beloved door greeter for 18 years at a shopping center in Columbia City, IN.
Dory was a selfless, determined, and whimsical woman. She spent much of her earnings
sending gifts and support back home to the Philippines. She enjoyed spoiling all the children in
her family, routinely sending Balikbayan home. Many of the younger family members called her
“Ninang”, meaning God Mother in Tagalog, because she always cared and looked out for them.
Dory was a devout Catholic and recognized mass every evening whether attending church or
not. She always kept a rosary with her and adorned her bedroom with catholic iconography.
Dory had a penchant for frogs, crossword puzzles, and sweets. One of her quirks was collecting
frog ephemera of all manner from stuffed animals to figurines. These filled her room along with
figurines of catholic saints and crossword puzzles she seemed to work on into perpetuity. Dory
could be mischievous, often sneaking sweets to enjoy despite being advised otherwise by
doctors and family–a symbol of her easy going nature. Dory believed in living life light-heartedly
and taking care of those around you. She was always a welcoming presence to all she
encountered no matter who you were. Adoracion lived up to her namesake and will be
cherished for the special person she was.
Dory is preceded in death by her parents Diodoro and Luz Cahiwat, as well as brothers, Lito,
Willie and JoJo. She is survived by her daughter Amelita Larimer(Jimenez) and son Christian
Yu; son-in-law Phillip Larimer. Other survivors include her grandchildren; Holli, Beau & Jade
Larimer (children of Phillip & Amelita Larimer) Krizia, Dorryne & Dorryth Yu (children of Christian
Yu).
Dory’s final wish was to be laid to rest with her parents and brothers. Cremation will be on
Monday, August 7, 2023 at the Cremation Society of Indiana in Indianapolis. Family will have a
private celebration stateside and a celebration of life will take place in Manila, Philippines.
Dory’s family will be fulfilling this wish and her ashes will be flown home to the islands. A
GoFundMe has been organized by Dory’s granddaughter, Jade to help achieve this. If you would
like to join us or help bless Dory as she has blessed us, please contact Amelita or Jade Larimer.
