Roy W. Nunn, 89, of Shelbyville, Indiana formerly Greenwood, Indiana, passed away on February 25, 2025. Roy was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky to Thula Phillips and Charles Nunn on February 3, 1936.
As a young man, he was quite athletic. He was invited to try out for the Cincinnati Reds at one point. He enjoyed driving ANY vehicle, writing, hunting mushrooms, shooting deer with bow and arrow, canoeing, and bowling. His love for bowling was passed on to his children and grandchildren.
In 1978, he scored a perfect 300 score with bowling legend Mike Aulby in Beech Grove. In the 90s, his daughter, Julie, went bowling with friends. At random, they picked the same Beech Grove lanes and her friends pointed out Roy’s name in huge letters on the wall. They nonchalantly said, “do you know that guy?” She revealed that it was her Father. They have since removed the letters but a plaque remains.
Roy’s early jobs included working at the gas and water company of Indianapolis. Family and relatives were always entertained by his stories from reading meters. He also spent some time in California and worked as a milkman in San Francisco. He was a truck driver/Teamster for 31 years receiving many awards from ATL/ANR Trucking out of Indianapolis. He loved driving and took his family on many trips across the Nation to visit many National Parks. Upon retirement, he worked for Meijer and learned to have compassion for the developmentally disabled population. He eventually drove a shuttle bus for an organization that transported disabled workers to their jobs.
Roy was a gifted writer and loved to put his thoughts on paper. This love for writing was passed on to his children. He enjoyed poetry, music and movies. He wrote a small book of poems called “Is American in Trouble” published in 1996. He also wrote and had a song published in 1968 called “My Paradise” with Jimmy McDaniels. He was currently working on a story that he called, “I Wish I Were Big” about a small pony who didn’t know how to be important. One of his favorite poems is Desiderata, by Max Ehrman.
He was married to his dedicated, loving wife of 56 years Ruth (Berg) Nunn. They met at a Waffle House in Indianapolis and were married October 12, 1968. They were married at New York Street United Methodist Church which is now a lovely wedding venue. He is survived by his wife, Ruth and children, Kevin Nunn of Tooele, Utah and Julie (Nunn) Farmer (Carl) of Mishawaka, Indiana and 4 grandchildren: Darwin, Max, Drew and Joseph. He is preceded in death by his daughter Theresa Jelliffe whose children (Roy’s Grandchildren) survive: Colin, Ashley and Jordan Sell of West Lafayette, Indiana. Roy was the last living sibling and was preceded in death by Pauline, Mildred, Viola, Shirley and a brother Charles. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. His nephew Jerry Moore has played an important part in Ruth and Roy’s life while in Shelbyville.
We would like to thank Main Street Hospice and all their staff and Timber Creek Village staff for all the wonderful care they gave Roy during his last days.
At this time, there will be no service until a later date. The Cremation Society of Indianapolis is handling end of life care. Memorial contributions can be payable to: Edward Jones fbo Ruth Nunn
