Kenneth Ray Matkins, 75, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on March 18, 1950, in the same city he called home throughout his life, Kenneth lived with a deep sense of commitment to his family and community.
A proud graduate of Beech Grove High School in the Class of 1968, Kenneth pursued further education at Michigan State University for two years and later attended Indiana University for six months. His passion for craftsmanship and preservation led him to a fulfilling career as a self-employed restoration and preservation contractor. Through his work, he contributed to maintaining the character and history of countless structures, leaving behind a legacy built not only in wood and stone but also in dedication and integrity.
Kenneth was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra (Skillman) Matkins; his children Ryan Matkins (Kim), Mindi Matkins (Soots), and Jason Niemeyer; grandchildren Ashley, Toni, Lexi, Kayla, Shawn, and Devon; and great-grandchildren Braylon and Karlee. He was preceded in death by his daughter Yvonne Marie.
Known for his warm heart and generous spirit, Kenneth was cherished by all who knew him. Whether gathered around the dinner table or enjoying quiet moments together, he found happiness in the company of family and friends. His presence brought comfort and laughter to every gathering.
Kenneth was also a proud member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM #63 for over three decades. He was a 32-degree mason. His involvement reflected his values of fellowship, service, and tradition—principles that guided him throughout his life.
His mason brothers will be holding a ceremony on July 26th at 10:30am at 524 Main Street Beech Grove with celebration of life to follow.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire love and unity among all who were touched by his life.
