John Francis Miller unexpectedly went to be with the Lord on March 19th, 2025, at the age of 83. He received very compassionate care from his team at Community North Heart and Vascular Hospital. He was born February 2nd, 1942, as one of seven children to the late Raymond and Lavelle Miller.
While he was just a small boy, he contracted the Polio virus and had to spend two years inside of an iron lung. I suppose when he got out, he decided he needed to make up for time lost and that’s exactly what he did. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. He attended St. Philip Neri school for elementary and Graduated from Cathedral Highschool. He went on to attend college at Canterbury Christ Church University. From there he joined the United States Postal Service where he carried mail for a few years before eventually becoming the head of the maintenance department and retired after 37 faithful years of service.
He met his beloved wife Hilda in an “Alley”, bowling alley that is. He said that he knew that day he had to marry her. They lived a life full of thrills and adventure. Together they visited 68 some different countries where they relished in dancing on ships with captains, attending orchestras and dining with the locals. The Rhine River in Germany is where they want to spend their final adventure together. He also traveled through most of the national parks in the United States and Canada including the Artic Circle where he enjoyed hunting polar bears, with his camera. Many of the framed photographs that decorate their home were taken by him while on their grand adventures.
In the last few years of John’s life, his post-Polio advanced, not allowing him to travel anymore, hence he enjoyed life closer to home to the fullest. He never knew a stranger and would make friends anywhere he went. He enjoyed his telephone calls every night to his family and friends, especially his early morning memes from friend Ginger. John also enjoyed dinners at his home where he was a wonderful host providing wines, cheeses and shrimp cocktails. On the weekends and during school breaks he would often have his youngest grandchildren Keaton and Nevaeh over for sleepovers. They would buy all the chocolate donuts, red dye number 40 candy, soda pop and chocolate milk to snack on while watching western movies. They would pitch in making dinner and would create a dish together. John had a very special bond with his grandchildren and was the grandpa every child desires to have. John also loved his Cub Cadet lawn mower. He would mow at least three times a week because he had to try and outdo his best friend and neighbor of many years Bob. John, Bob and neighbor Dave would often meet in one of the yards on their mowers and have conversations. John would call this their prayer meetings. They were known as the Triumvirate!
He was a very loving and compassionate person, always putting others before himself. Examples of John’s kindness include buying corsages every Mother’s Day for all the women at St. Paul’s Hermitage and boutonnieres for all the men on Father’s Day. He would also buy candy every Easter and once he even wore a pink bunny costume to hand it out to the residents. He would also never hesitate to help anyone who needed a hand getting up in life. His selfless nature will be remembered by all who knew him.
John is survived by his daughter Julianna (Jay) Corbin with grandchildren Bailey, Jaydah, Keaton and Nevaeh, and Daughter Patricia (Brian) Bromberek, with grandchildren Sarah, Patrick and Erin. Also surviving are his brother, Jimmy (Loretta) Miller, sister, Margie Miller, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents; his wife of many years, Hilda (nee, Robinson) Miller; sisters, JoAnne & Barbara; and brothers, George & Charles Miller.
He would want everyone to remember during this difficult time that where one adventure ends, the next one begins. John is now with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, all of those who passed before him and his loving wife Hilda.
A Mass for John and Hilda both will be held at St. Paul’s Hermitage at 3pm on Friday June 20th in the Chapel and will follow in the party room until 6pm for a celebration of life. Let us make this a time to remember these two amazing people.
Arrangements have been entrusted to The Cremation Society of Indiana, 4115 Shelby Street. Leave A Message or Share A Memory.
