Charles was a former neighbor in Valparaiso and a friend for over a decade. Although he had difficulty accepting help from others, he was always a generous soul; anyone doing him a favor could easily become a friend for life. Charles had some difficult circumstances over the years, but considering what I believe to be his place in eternity, he's unlikely now to be concerned about most of the things that bothered him in his mortal life. Charles spoke well of many friends and neighbors I never had the opportunity to meet, including those in Crawfordville. As we approach the one-year anniversary of his passing, I think about the friends and acquaintances Charles left behind, and feel certain that, given the chance, he'd have offered well wishes and hearty goodbyes to each one.

Dear Charles, thank you for your friendly and kind heart. I know you had struggles and loneliness and I'm sorry for your suffering and for not having much time to talk with you or help. I'm thankful that you were a believer and I believe that you are whole and happy with Jesus now. I will see you again it heaven, friend!
