Patricia Ann Payne, 85, Greenwood, passed away Saturday morning at Aspen Trace.
Patricia was born January 14, 1934 in Muncie, IN to Robert and Mary (Stock) Winans. She is survived by five children, Linda Kidd of (Greenwood, IN), David Payne (Garnet Vaughan) of Greenwood, Pamela Rehner (Steve Rehner) of (Willmore, KY), Debra Strella of (Orlando, FL), and Mark Payne (Lea Ann Smith) of (Crystal Lake, IL); (7) grandchildren — Michael Kidd, Emily (Rehner) Tavares, Daniel Rehner, Jonathan Rehner, Allison Rehner, Taryn Strella, Drew Strella and (4) great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Winans and Mary (Winans) Stock and her brother Phillip Winans.
Patricia’s interests were diverse to say the least. She tried her hand at many crafts — quilting, stained glass, sewing, knitting – and family members were beneficiaries of her handiwork. Pat loved the arts and enjoyed everything from Mozart and musicals to opera and a cappella. Home shows, art shows, air shows … she attended them all. Patricia was curious and well-read. She loved history and biographies and was a student of the Bible. Pat loved to travel … anytime, anywhere. Especially in the fall – her favorite season – and especially if there was water, a lighthouse or a car race nearby. Yes, Patricia was a sports fan, too. She would have enjoyed meeting Dale (#8) Jr. and her passion for football was underscored when she honored her favorite Green Bay Packers QB by naming her lop-eared rabbit Bart. Pat loved her cats … Missy Kitty and Simba. She swam at the Baxter Y where she enjoyed water aerobics and the friendship of her fellow paddlers. Card player? Pat could smell a deck of cards a mile away. She loved playing the old favorites and liked learning new games, too. Bridge, Golf, 31 … Patricia loved to play cards at family gatherings and enjoyed weekly play with her kindred (card club) spirits at St. Andrews Apartments.
Pat lived her adult life in Greenwood where her work included time at Merle Norman, Southside Pediatrics, helping her son David and daughter-in-law Garnet found Winchester Place, and most recently working for the Skillman dealerships.
In her “free time” Patricia volunteered as a greeter at the Franciscan Health Hospital south campus and she liked to say she was a great “guinea pig” when she volunteered her knees for practice by UIndy’s physical therapy students.
Patricia’s friends recall her infectious smile, memorable laugh and great sense of humor, which are already missed.
Patricia’s Celebration of Life (Open House) is set for Saturday, November 16, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Winchester Place, 300 N. Madison Avenue, Greenwood.
In honor of Patricia’s interests (and in consideration of family allergies) her loved one’s request donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Johnson County Humane Society or the Franciscan Health Hospice House and Hospice Services.
