Samuel Hugh Paine, Jr.

Samuel Hugh Paine Jr. passed from this life early November 5, 2020 at Indiana University Hospital West at the age of 84.  He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Carol L. Paine (nee Hood). They were married in Maywood, Illinois on September 27, 1957.

The third of four children, he was born in Aurora, Illinois and grew up in Houghton, New York and Oak Park, Illinois, among other locations, graduating from Chicago Christian High School. Afterwards, he attended Houghton College, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.  During his career, he worked as a math teacher, a data analyst, and as a process engineer at Automatic Electric for 21+ years.

Sam had a passion for the word of God and music.  He served in his churches wherever he lived and in whatever capacity was needed, living out his dedication to God through service.  He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, astronomy and camping, among many other hobbies and interests.

He is lovingly remembered by his brother, Charles S. Paine; his sister, Anne Paine-Root; 7 children, David Paine, Sarah Paine, Joel Paine, Anne O’Dell, Lorna Drake, Martha Carrigan, and Elizabeth Logan; as well as, 23 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Paine; his father, S. Hugh Paine; his sister, Margaret (Peggy) Swanson; and his grandson, Stephen Wesley Nelson.
